With an introduction and post film discussion by Howie Movshovitz
The title of the movie translates as “Golden Helmet” and refers to the almost alarming white/blonde hair piled atop the irresistible Marie (Simone Signoret). The movie is about not-so-young small-time criminals, probably at the end of the 1800s, although you don’t see much crime taking place. Instead there’s desire, passion and jealousy present with the kind of blunt force rare in American films, but this world feels like home for director Jacques Becker. Most French movies of the Belle Epoque period focus on the swells. This film does not.
