Fontaine (François Leterrier) is sentenced to die in a Nazi prison camp in the French city of Lyon in 1943. In Bresson’s understated and dramatically undramatic style (to say the least) Fontaine prepares to escape by studying the minute details of his situation – his cell, the guards, the view from a barred window, how food is brought to him. Based on a memoir by André Devigny, who himself escaped on the day he was to die.
