With an introduction and post film discussion by Howie Movshovitz

A film about World War 1 with no combat. French prisoners of war, officers, are sent to a series of ever more restrictive prisons because they keep trying to escape. The illusions are many – about war, nationality, social class and, in one breathtaking sequence, even the boundaries between men and women. Director Jean Renoir is an utter master of cinema. He can show the futility and the fatigue of war in a single shot of a man walking across a room. Simply one of the greatest films ever. With the protean Jean Gabin, Marcel Dalio, Erich von Stroheim and Dita Parlo.
