Overview

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans to be sold into bondage on North American shores, the Coalition Against Global Genocide will present a special screening of Slavery and the Making of America by award-winning filmmaker Dante J. James. The documentary series on the history of American slavery from its beginnings in the British colonies through post–Civil War Reconstruction is narrated by Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman; the first installment examines the integral role that slavery played in shaping the new country and challenges the long-held notion that it was exclusively a Southern enterprise. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion to address such questions as: What economic incentives link genocide and slavery? And how do we proceed today to reach the ideals of equality, respect, and freedom?
