In 1862, pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher—a real-life English aeronaut and scientist here played by Eddie Redmayne—is hoping to advance human knowledge of the weather. Facing skepticism from the scientific community, he enlists feisty balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) to take him higher than any human has flown before. Their initial ascent is all wonderment at the crystal-clear views and utter silence of the skies—but they soon encounter turbulent weather conditions, and the balloon is violently buffeted about while rising to frigid and truly dangerous heights. (In an especially memorable scene, the daredevil Wren clambers up its exterior with frozen, bleeding hands in an attempt to fix a malfunction.)

Co-writer/director Tom Harper turns out a tense and visceral adventure at altitude, juxtaposed with dramatic flashbacks on the ground that lay the foundation for Glaisher’s ambition and Wren’s recklessness.

Bert Trautmann was a Manchester City goalkeeper who became a hero first for winning the 1956 FA Cup finals with a broken neck and later for good works that earned him an Order of the British Empire. Before that, though, he was a German POW in love with an English girl. This is his astonishing story.
