Overview

Tyler is a cocky high-school jock; Emily is his quieter younger sister. They live with their father Ronald and stepmother Catherine in a stable, if strict, middle-class African-American household in suburban Florida, where their respective futures seem more or less laid out: bright for the wrestling champ, modest for his overshadowed sibling. Suffice it to say that the future has a way of shattering expectations.

Unfolding in two parts, this astonishing drama explores how a family rocked by tragedy learns to forgive in the face of grief, love without condition, and grow toward the light in the darkest of times. Anchored by extraordinary performances from all involved—Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell, Sterling K. Brown, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Alexa Demie, and Lucas Hedges (see also Honey Boy)—it’s already on the radars of Oscars oddsmakers. And so, of course, is its writer/director Trey Edward Shults (Krisha, DFF38), whom The Hollywood Reporter has called “one of the most versatile and gifted young filmmakers working today.”

Monsters.

Monsters.

There are no monsters here—just two well-meaning but complicated and conflicted individuals coming to terms with profound loss in this intricately etched, achingly beautiful portrait of a couple in crisis. Think Scenes from a Marriage set in modern-day Romania.

This raw, intimate portrait of a young woman confronting the complexities of the adult world over the course of a summer in Harlem is at once timeless and bracingly contemporary. Make note of director Rashaad Ernesto Green and co-writer/lead actress Zora Howard as talents to watch.
