Overview

The crack supporting cast of this offbeat homage to classic film noir is substantial, including Bruce Willis, Alec Baldwin, Willem Dafoe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Cherry Jones, Bobby Cannavale, and Michael Kenneth Williams, among others. (You could even count jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, who recorded some of the soundtrack’s numbers.) But director and star Edward Norton, who adapted the script from a Jonathan Lethen novel, is at its heart.

Norton plays Lionel Essrog, who suffers from Tourette syndrome—a condition that had rather limited his prospects in life until Frank Minna (Willis) came along to offer him a job at his firm of private detectives. Though a good boss, Frank’s mixed up in some shady business—which seems to be par for the course in 1950s New York, where ruthless construction magnates like Moses Randolph (Baldwin) as well as gangsters run the city with impunity. When he’s whacked, it’s up to Lionel to investigate the murder. That it turns out to be a drop in the bucket of local corruption is for him to find out—perhaps with the help of Laura Rose (Mbatha-Raw), an activist lawyer who’s fighting for the very communities that Randolph is so cavalierly developing out of existence.
