This stunning documentary about visionary choreographer Merce Cunningham bursts onto the screen in glorious 3D, bringing the rhythm, energy, and visual artistry of his works to life.

Moscow-born director Alla Kovgan traces Cunningham’s career for three decades—from 1942 to 1972 and from struggling New York performer to pioneer of modern dance in America. A risk taker, Cunningham constantly broke new ground, but his ideas weren’t always accepted—sometimes not even by himself; as he once said, “I never believed that dancing was the greatest of the arts. But when it clicks, there’s the rub.”

Cunningham incorporates never-before-seen archival footage of its namesake working with equally legendary collaborators such as his lifelong partner, composer John Cage, and artist Robert Rauschenberg. It also captures the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as they recreate excerpts from 14 of his most memorable works. Inspired by Cunningham’s own sensibilities, Kovgan filmed some of the performances with a stand-alone camera in such unexpected locations as a tunnel, a forest, a garden, and a high-rise rooftop.
