The consequences of silence are at the heart of this slow-burning thriller from Japanese director Kôji Fukada (Hospitalité, DFF34; Harmonium, DFF39), which follows a woman consumed both by events beyond her control and by her desire for revenge.

In the first of two parallel story lines, Ichiko is an in-home nurse for the elderly Tôko; she's become close to her charge’s entire family, especially the serious and inscrutable older granddaughter Motoko. Indeed, the two women have a particularly intense relationship, with Motoko harboring an unexpressed attraction to Ichiko. So when her younger sister Saki is abducted by Ichiko’s own nephew, Motoko urges her friend to remain silent and avoid guilt by association.

Years later, we meet Ichiko as she takes a seat in hairdresser Kazumichi’s chair and behaves with a disconcerting level of intimacy toward the young man, given that it’s their first appointment. With a new hairdo, Risa—as she now calls herself—rents an apartment overlooking Kazumichi’s home, where she observes his movements and those of his guests, including a familiar face from her past.
