Overview

Writer/director Corneliu Porumboiu turns his lens away from his native Romania for this noir-ish black comedy that sends its antihero on a romp from Bucharest to the remote Canary Island of La Gomera to Singapore.

Dirty cop Cristi is caught between his icy boss (who may even be more crooked than he is), the gorgeous Gilda, and her man Zsolt—who happens to know where 30 million laundered Euros are stashed. What Cristi knows, better than anyone, is that they are all under surveillance; his own flat is bugged, presumably by his superiors on the police force. So he devises a plan to travel to La Gomera and learn its ancient whistling language, Silbo Gomero, to communicate with his cohorts in ways that can’t be intercepted or decoded. The fuzz, he’s convinced, will only notice the exceptional tunefulness of the local birds, and he’ll be able to break Zsolt out of prison.

As a twisty tale of a double-crossing cop, The Whistlers skirts the line between deadpan and deadly.
