Despite the all-too-common news of school shootings from Columbine onward, millions of parents and students around the United States continue to go about their daily lives trusting that they’re safe. The families affiliated with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were no different—until the afternoon of Valentine’s Day 2018, when a gunman walked into one building and opened fire.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Nightline producers Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman went to Parkland to meet with the survivors, including senior David Hogg, who recorded his class during the attack and became the public face of the Never Again movement to end gun violence; freshman Brooke Harrison, who was in the first classroom to come under attack; Andrew Pollack, the father of 18-year old Meadow, who was killed after being shot nine times; and the loved ones of 17-year-old Joaquin Oliver. The filmmakers developed trusting relationships with these and other families and friends who opened their doors during the most difficult period of their lives.
The resulting documentary is a compassionate memorial as well as a vehicle for posing hard questions. Weaving together candid interviews, verité clips, and personal archival footage, Taguchi and Lefferman capture turning points both intimate and defining—from quiet moments of grief and reflection to political awakenings and pivotal appearances in the national spotlight. But as the country continues to reel amid an epidemic of mass shootings, the directors also ask: What can we learn from a child who has stared down the barrel of a gun? From a parent mourning the shocking loss of a young son or daughter? And from a community attempting to rebuild itself after suffering one of the most horrific episodes of gun violence in American history?
