Overview

The Siege of Leningrad lasted more than two years during World War II to wreak horrific devastation. Even the demolition of the city’s buildings was nothing compared to the damage inflicted on the psyches of its citizens.

In this crushingly beautiful period drama from Russian co-writer/director Kantemir Balagov, lush cinematography belies the unyielding harshness of postwar existence that faces lovers Iya and Masha at every turn. The shy, gangly Iya—nicknamed Beanpole—has a decent job as a nurse at a veteran’s hospital, where her boss sneaks her extra rations and the patients flirt with her while entertaining Masha’s son Pashka, a wide-eyed, ginger-haired moppet who accompanies her to work. But Iya also suffers from debilitating fits that lead to a heartbreaking tragedy. Masha, a former soldier who had marched into Berlin with a vengeance for the atrocities she suffered during the Siege, has returned home with a cruel streak as well as injuries that prevent her from having the second child she desperately desires. The two women struggle to rebuild their lives even in the certainty, felt all around them, that hope for the future is fruitless.
