Overview

Renowned Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Two Days, One Night, DFF37) won the Best Director award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival for this complex, engrossing drama about a young Belgian-Arab teen on a fast track to radicalization that seems to have no off-ramp.

Up until recently, 13-year-old Ahmed was living a seemingly normal, secular life at home and in school. But under the spell of the local imam, he’s suddenly on a road to radicalization from which no one can derail him—certainly not his mother or his teacher, Inès, whose behavior is, in his view, exactly what the coming jihad will put an end to.

That his actions will have consequences is inevitable. The question is whether Ahmed will face them with an eye toward redemption or revenge.
