Overview

Diana Kennedy is British, but Mexico claims her as its own. The author of eight cookbooks on regional Mexican cuisine, Kennedy has a passion for her subject that shines through every colorful scene of this uplifting documentary. Now 94, Kennedy reflects on her career as a food writer, television-show host, and dedicated environmentalist; chef Rick Bayless calls her “a repository of knowledge,” but she prefers “the Mick Jagger of cooking. ”

Kennedy published her first book in 1972. In those years, she traveled across Mexico by bus to save enough money for the pigs and chickens she raised to facilitate her research. She frequented village markets in search of local produce to use in recipes gleaned from indigenous cooks, referencing their origins in her headnotes. Her 600-page tome Oaxaca al Gusto, which took 14 years to write, won a James Beard Foundation award in 2011. Today, Kennedy lives off the grid in Mexico.

Director Elizabeth Carroll gives audiences a taste of Kennedy’s feistiness, wry humor, and devotion to her craft. Complete with eye-opening archival footage, celebrity-chef interviews, and Kennedy’s own words of wisdom, Nothing Fancy is sure to capture any food lover’s fancy.

We will host a reception at The Goods next door to the Sie, where guest chefs will take over the kitchen to prepare a Mexican feast. (Note: Tickets for the documentary and reception combined are very limited and higher-priced.)
