Consider this your trigger warning: In this biopic, director Fatih Akin (Head On, DFF27; In the Fade, DFF40) depicts the times and crimes of real-life German serial killer Fritz Honka in all their sadism, perversion, and grisliness.

Honka dwells in the most squalid corners of 1970s Hamburg, dividing his time off from menial jobs between his filthy apartment and the diviest of dives, The Golden Glove, frequented by all walks of barfly and pariah. Impotent in every sense of the word, he’ll lure any woman he can with promises of free booze to his lair, where he assaults them with the full force of his male rage; on the occasion they fight back, they wind up dismembered and stuffed behind a trap door. (One of the film’s many stomach-churning flashes of black humor comes with the proliferation of air fresheners hung from his ceiling.)

Given that his victims are outcasts, their disappearance is of no consequence to anyone. The fact that Honka believes himself worthy of a nubile teenage girl named Petra, however, may finally be his overdue downfall.
