Christmas night in Roubaix, France, doesn’t mean idyllic holiday dinners; the family gatherings in this gritty town are likely to end with drawn carving knives and calls to the police to break up the fight.

On the beat is veteran chief Yakoub Daoud, who, along with his rookie partner, Louis Cotterel, is also called to investigate a teenage girl’s disappearance, a carjacking allegedly perpetrated by immigrants armed with blowtorches, and a case of arson. Neighbor Claude (Léa Seydoux, Blue is the Warmest Color, Spectre) and her girlfriend Marie are unremarkable witnesses to the blaze—but when the elderly woman living next door couple turns up murdered, the two are suddenly suspects.

Daoud and Cotterel separate the self-assured couple for questioning as they try to tease out the truth in this riveting crime procedural, which director Arnaud Desplechin (Ismael’s Ghosts, DFF40; A Christmas Tale, DFF31) based on a 2008 television documentary.
