Overview

Prompted by a hellishly hilarious conversation with a fellow partygoer who dreamt he threw himself out a window because he hadn’t accomplished anything meaningful yet, aimless Bridget decides that, at the age of 34, it’s finally time to get her life together. She’s looking to upgrade her job and relationship, so she applies for a position as a nanny in lieu of her current waitressing gig and starts not-quite-dating Jace, a younger man who, to her horror, keeps an “emotions journal” and attempts to engage her in conversation about its contents.

Bridget lands the job—after the family’s first choice falls through—only to discover that the timing actually couldn’t be worse: She’s dealing with an unwanted pregnancy even as she finds herself in charge of a precocious and difficult six-year-old, Frances, whose sass is unrelenting (“We’re done,” she dismisses Bridget upon their first meeting). But Frances is a bright kid who begins to challenge Bridget’s own expectations of herself in this sweet comedy-drama, which earned Special Jury and Audience prizes at SXSW for director Alex Thompson and screenwriter/lead actress Kelly O’Sullivan.
