Israeli director/co-writer Nadav Lapid took home the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival this year for this complex and mysterious portrait of an Israeli émigré determined not simply to leave his homeland but to excise all traces of it from his psyche.

Yoav, a melodramatic young soldier newly arrived in Paris, refuses to speak Hebrew, prone instead to launching into monologues in stilted, archaic French. He studiously avoids taking in any of the city’s great sights; instead, he wanders around, staring at the gray pavement and muttering to himself in an attempt to improve his vocabulary (developing a particular fondness for the words “warble” and “scribble” along the way).

In between haunting bridges and bars around the city, Yoav regales Emile—a friend to whom he’s become quite attached—with tales of military service that don’t quite ring true to Emile’s girlfriend, Caroline. It’s just one more instance of the ever-more-extreme measures he’s taking to assimilate into a culture that he fetishizes—however thwarted he may be by forces national, philosophical, familial, and psychological.
