Overview

Algeria, 1994. A civil war is raging, and the horrors being perpetrated on the country in the name of religion defy logic as well as morality. So, perhaps does the quest two police officers and friends since childhood, Lotfi and S., have set off on through the vast Sahara Desert in search of Abou Leila, a terrorist on the run. After all, he could be anywhere.

Admittedly, Lotfi has an ulterior motive: to keep S. as far from the action in Algiers as possible, knowing that the trauma of war has brought his friend to the brink of insanity. Or is it he himself who’s going mad? In harrowing scene after scene of this psychodrama, against the glare of desert sun on infinite sand, Algerian writer/director Amin Sidi-Boumédiène creates a world so beset by senseless violence that it’s increasingly impossible for anyone to distinguish their waking moments from their nightmares.

As a soldier in the Tunisian army, S. is trapped in a cycle of violence. As the pregnant wife of a wealthy man, F. is trapped in a gilded cage. Their escape into the forest makes for an experimental, richly allegorical tale about abandoning society to return to a more primitive state in nature.
