Overview

It’s no spoiler alert to say that there are no monsters in Romanian filmmaker Marius Olteanu’s emotionally intricate, achingly beautiful feature debut. There’s just Dana and Andrei—two well-meaning but complicated and conflicted people coming to terms with the loss of a love that was supposed to be forever. Think Scenes from a Marriage set in modern-day Bucharest.

Taking place over the course of 24 hours, the story unfolds in three chapters. The first two, shot in a square aspect ratio, paint up-close portraits of husband and wife as individuals in crisis, while the third brings them together in widescreen. Along the way, there’s a mysterious taxicab ride. A crude hookup. Obligatory visits with oblivious family and friends. And the heartbreaking realization that you only hurt the ones you love.
