Overview

The waters of the titular lake are as murky and troubled as the characters in this Chinese noir thriller from writer/director Diao Yinan—his first outing since Black Coal, Thin Ice, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014.

It’s set in the rambling city of Wuhan, where rain batters roofs and asphalt relentlessly and “bathing beauties” entice clients into the lake for paid sex. By the time mid-level mob manager Zhou Zenong meets one of these bathers, Liu Aiai, he’s already back on the lam after his recent release from prison, due to an illicit meeting that ended with a dead policeman and a head separated from its body. Zhou’s resigned to a violent fate, but he wants to ensure his wife and child will end up collecting the price on his own head; Liu’s motives are more unclear.
