Upon its release in 1995, Showgirls was met by critics and audiences alike with overwhelming derision. But in the intervening decades, Paul Verhoeven’s salacious NC-17 peep-through-the-keyhole at the lives of erotic dancers in Vegas (including Elizabeth Berkley’s Nomi Malone) has itself been granted a serious second look, with an ever-growing community of cinephiles engaging in impassioned debate over its artistic merits and its progressive approach to sex and gender.

Joined by a chorus of film scholars and devotees, documentarian Jeffrey McHale examines the cultural legacy of Showgirls while considering its place in Verhoeven’s oeuvre, which includes such turn-of-the-millennium touchstones as RoboCop, Total Recall,, and Basic Instinct. In tracing the film’s journey from notorious flop to cult classic to unlikely critical darling, You Don’t Nomi takes a thought-provoking and entertaining look at an unforgettable piece of American popular culture as well as at the surprising ways in which we connect with movies and, through them, with one another.
