Italian food is prepared with care and passion and culinary imagery plays a prominent place in Italian films.
This four-session education program on Italian Cinema and Food, paired with Italian food and wine, offers participants much food for thought to chew on as they partake in the viewing and discussion of images from classic Italian cinema and a recent feature-length film.

Session #2 - Primo. Food as a Sign of Human, Social and Environmental Exploitation
Sink your teeth al dente into some of the classics of Italian cinema such as Vittorio De Sica’s
(1949) Bicycle Thief/Ladri di Biciclette, and Giuseppe De Santis’ (1949) Riso Amaro/Bitter Rice, where food becomes a marker of social status, power, sexuality, and identity.

Discussion led by Roberta K. Waldbaum, Ph.D
Professor Waldbaum teaches Italian language, literature, culture and film in the Department of Languages & Literatures at the University of Denver where she holds the Anna Maglione-Sie Endowed Professorship in Italian Culture.
