Join us in celebrating the gay cult classics every month at our Big Gay Matinee, presented by CinemaQ! Complete your Sunday Funday - after you brunch and before you hit beer bust - as we look at what makes some films catnip for gay audiences. You don't have to be gay to enjoy these cinematic treats... BUT IT HELPS! Come early for pre-show entertainment, drink specials and more hosted by Keith Garcia and friends!
Gay conversion therapy is no laughing matter but satire and camp are the methods by which queer filmgoers can start to take down and unpack some unfortunate aspects attacking our community. Twenty years ago this gay cult classic started to take the piss out of an otherwise scary topic with humor and heart and make Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall lesbian poster girls in the process.
In the film, Megan (Lyonne) considers herself a typical American girl. She excels in school and cheerleading, and she has a handsome football-playing boyfriend, even though she isn't that crazy about him. So she's stunned when her parents decide she's gay and send her to True Directions, a boot camp meant to alter her sexual orientation. While there, Megan meets a rebellious and unashamed teen lesbian, Graham (DuVall). Though Megan still feels confused, she starts to have feelings for Graham and that may be just what she needs to find out who this cheerleader really is!
