Overview

From the director of Moonlight, Barry Jenkins, this adaptation of a James Baldwin novel deftly and deeply probes the dreams deferred of a young couple in 1970s Harlem.

Tish (KiKi Layne) is 19, pregnant, and in love with Fonny (Stephan James), the father of her soon-to-be-born child; her hopes for the future are as high as they can be under the circumstances. Until, that is, Fonny goes to prison. She knows he’s innocent—but what can she do, without means or influence, to save him from his wrongful conviction? Regina King co-stars as Tish’s anguished mother in a period drama that’s nonetheless timeless in its depiction of the bonds of love—romantic, familial, and communal—as they tighten, fray, and tighten again in the face of social injustice.
