Overview

“Fame puts you there where things are hollow,” David Bowie once sang, which is as fitting an epigraph as any for Brady Corbet’s slickly nervy, and nerve-rattling, study of a pop star whose days in the spotlight are numbered by a life lived in the shadows of catastrophe.

As teenagers, sisters Celeste and Eleanor survived a seismic tragedy; in making music about their experience, Celeste became a star. Fast-forward 14 years, and the babe in the woods–turned-diva now has a teenage daughter of her own and a scandal to live down. But on the brink of a comeback, she finds herself thrust into the midst of shattering violence once again.

The Red Carpet track record of Natalie Portman (Black Swan, DFF33; Jackie, DFF39) continues here with her riveting performance as the elder Celeste; original music from Sia adds an acoustic layer of star power.

Director Brady Corbet will be in attendance for the screening.
