Overview

Richard Attenborough’s 1969 screen adaptation of playwright Charles Chilton’s 1963 World War I musical satire stars a who’s who of British thespians, including Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Susannah York, and Dirk Bogarde. As Roger Ebert described it in a glowing review at the time, Attenborough presents wartime—with its military brass and soldiers, patriots and grieving parents—“as a British music-hall revue; there’s a lot of smiling up front, but backstage you can see the greasepaint and smell the sweat, and the smiles become desperate, and there begins to be blood.”

Screening in collaboration with the Arvada Center in honor of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
