Overview

SOLD OUT!
Greek provocateur Yorgos Lanthimos has made his bitingly satirical, darkly surreal mark on international arthouse cinema repeatedly over the past decade, from Dogtooth and Alps (DFF35) to The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Now he’s back with a silver-screen chimera if ever there was one—part royal costume drama, part “filthy, violent, and outrageous period comedy that drips with bad language and worse behavior,” to quote the BBC, which adds, “It’s also strangely touching.”

It’s set in 18th-century England, where Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) is in ill health and ill temper, with only her trusty companion Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) to soothe her soul as well as oversee the household chores, such as an ongoing war with France. Sarah could use some help: Enter her impoverished cousin Abigail (the ever-delightful Emma Stone), who’s all too willing to play the servant. Until, that is, she sees an opportunity to step into a juicier role—which happens to fit the description of Sarah’s own. Let the palace intrigue begin.
