Overview

Rike needs a vacation. So the big-city paramedic sets out for Ascension Island on her sailboat—only to hit a storm that lands her at the watery doorstep, and soon-to-be grave, of a sinking refugee vessel. In this timely, seat-gripping drama at sea, she must help where the powers that be—the maritime authorities and Mother Nature alike—will not.

Certainly time isn’t on her side. Though the coast guard has instructed her not to get involved before their arrival—which doesn’t appear to be anywhere on the horizon—she can hear the passengers’ increasing desperation. Space isn’t on her side either, however: Her boat is clearly too small to accommodate all of them.

Under the direction of Wolfgang Fischer, both the remarkable cinematography of Benedict Neuenfels and Susanne Wolff’s empathic performance as Rike ensure that the tragedy in the eye of Styx is no less immediately personal for its sweeping geopolitical implications.
