Overview

Rust director/co-writer Aly Muritiba is a former high school teacher and father to a teenager; his experience serves him well in this wrenching Brazilian drama about high-school students navigating the pitfalls of life in the digital age.

Classmates Tati and Renet have begun a cautious flirtation—trading meaningful glances, liking each other’s Facebook posts, and sharing music. Then a video of Tati having sex with an ex-boyfriend is leaked to the entire school. She endures the taunts and insults of her classmates, smirks and advances from adult men, and the abandonment of her friends while attempting to discover who distributed the sex tape and grappling with her devastation, paranoia, and anger. After a shocking turn of events, Tati’s teachers and classmates must acknowledge the roles each of them have played in her bad fortune and reckon with the all-too-tangible and wide-ranging consequences of their actions—in the real as well as the virtual world.
