Overview

Picking up where they left off with Measure of a Man (DFF38), director/co-writer Stéphane Brizé (see also Mademoiselle Chambon, DFF32) and his leading man Vincent Lindon have teamed up for another fiery, boots-on-the-ground depiction of class warfare in modern-day France.

When the managers of Perrin Industries announce their plans to shut down a factory that employs 1,100 despite record profits on the backs of their already-struggling labor pool, Laurent Amédéo (Lindon) finds himself on the front lines of protest—and he’s determined to see it through, even as the financial and emotional burdens of a strike take their toll. Shot with handheld cameras and featuring a mostly nonprofessional, working-class cast, At War puts viewers in the thick of the battle between the little guy and the powers that be.

Complete with a Greek chorus of sorts, Icelandic filmmaker Benedikt Erlingsson’s supremely quirky follow-up to the acclaimed Of Horses and Men (DFF37) centers on an eco-saboteur whose mission to thwart the building of a new metal refinery is vexed by another quest: to become a mother.
