Overview

Meet maverick Manchester comic Frank Sidebottom, the creation—and in some ways downfall—of the performance artist behind his giant papier-mâché head, Chris Sievey. Sievey’s life story, which inspired the 2014 black comedy Frank, unfolds in this engrossing documentary by Steve Sullivan.

Sidebottom was the toast and court jester of Manchester, England’s music and comedy scenes for over 25 years—but only a privileged few knew the man who played him. Being Frank tells a twisted tale of split personalities—a would-be rock star turned suburban superhero whose alterego ultimately consumed him. Extensive archival materials from Sievey’s personal effects—including hundreds of notebooks, home movies, artworks, and musical compositions—combine with insights from his family, friends, and colleagues to reveal the true story of a wayward genius.
