Overview

My Life as a Dog this is not. As in Lasse Hallström’s 1985 tearjerker about a young boy coming to terms with the death of his mother, the protagonist of Dog copes with loss by, well, getting on all fours and barking at it. But the gist of this tragicomedy, adapted by Belgian co-writer/director Samuel Benchétrit from his own eponymous novel, is far sharper-fanged than that of its predecessor.

In the blink of an eye, Jacques has been stripped of everything: his family, his home, his job—and now, to add insult and injury to insult and injury, the brand-new pet for which he’s already purchased training sessions. So he decides to attend them himself—as the dog. Is this utterly broken man asking to be beaten too? Or is there an upside to his willing degradation? You can’t help but sympathize as you squirm. (For a completely different but equally dark take on the hangdog theme, see Dogman, also playing in this year’s festival.)
