Never heard of a corporate musical? Neither had comedy writer Steve Young, until his assignment to scour bargain-bin vinyl for a Late Night with David Letterman segment led him to rare recordings of the entertainment genre that flourished from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Though never intended for public viewing, these were full-scale productions, commissioned by major American corporations (General Electric, McDonald’s, Ford, DuPont, Xerox) and performed at national conventions to entertain and educate employees about upcoming products; the likes of Martin Short, Florence Henderson, and Chita Rivera got their starts on the industrial stage. And once Young began delving into the cast recordings he’d stumbled upon—marked “internal use only”—his initial fascination blossomed into a fanboy obsession. Young’s palpable delight when he discovers a 16mm recording of The Bathrooms are Coming (commissioned by American Standard) is just one charming slice of director Dava Whisenant’s rollicking documentary, which includes appearances by Letterman, Short, and Jello Biafra.
Director/Screenwriter Dava Whisenant will be in attendance for the Sat. Nov. 10th and Sun. Nov. 11th screenings.
