It should be a happy time for Irene, who’s on the verge of obtaining her long-delayed high-school diploma and who adores her four children. But just as a mother’s love knows no bounds, neither does her anxiety—and Irene’s is kicked into high gear at the imminent departure of her oldest son, Fernando, who’s been offered a spot on a professional handball team in Germany and must leave his home on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in less than a month. Irene’s concerns isolate her from Fernando and her loving husband, Klaus; her sister and nephew’s sudden presence in their home—with her violent brother-in-law too close for comfort—doesn’t help matters.
Together with his wife, co-writer, and lead actress Karine Teles, Brazilian director Gustavo Pizzi infuses his family drama with plenty of humorous and endearing moments—including a deeply relatable scene in which Irene, after an argument with Klaus, gets drunk and wakes up the kids by dancing around the kitchen to particularly aggro music.
