Overview

Writer-director Alex Ross Perry (The Color Wheel, SDFF34) explores the torment of modern domestic life, with a fabulous ensemble cast—including Mary-Louise Parker, Jason Schwartzman, Chloë Sevigny, Keith Poulson and the Beastie Boys’ Adam Horovitz—on hand to embrace both the dramatic and darkly comedic sides of despair.

Nick (Horovitz) has settled into a safe if unsatisfying existence with his wife (Sevigny) in Brooklyn, where he toils on an archival project for his father-in-law. When 20-something Naomi (Emily Browning) arrives from Australia to assist Nick for the semester, she’s a breath of fresh air in his stifling environment. But she has designs on another married man, music producer Buddy (Schwartzman)—who himself is disinclined toward an affair. It’s a love pentagon to upset the delicate balance of not one but two households, which Perry sketches with all the neurotically charged, bitingly funny dialogue that has long earned him comparisons to Woody Allen.
