Ewa, 27, has a secret she is desperate to keep. While her husband Andrzej is working abroad, she begins a brief affair with a local high-school student, gives birth to an illegitimate child and quietly puts the baby up for adoption.
After her hospital stay, Ewa returns home, where her mother has been taking care of her young children Marysia and Jas; upon her husband’s own return, she tries to resume a normal routine with her family, meeting her lover at the wild rose plantation where she works in order to end their relationship and struggling to overcome her pangs of guilt. Can she live with her secret and face the reality of life in a small village? Before she finds an answer to the question, Jas disappears. And as a frantic search begins, the straits Ewa finds herself in become ever more dire.
In this unsparing drama, director Anna Jadowska explores the roles of and expectations for women in contemporary Polish society.
