As the daughter of a prostitute, flower-seller María Candelaria (Dolores del Río) is an outcast in her village—except in the eyes of Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendáriz). But they are too poor to get married. Mexican filmmaker Emilio Fernández’s 1943 melodrama follows the couple as they endure the trials and tribulations of life in a prejudicial and greedy world.
This screening is part of a three-film retrospective of the great Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa. A corresponding exhibit will take place throughout the festival at the Annex in the McNichols Building.
