Each of us appears in front of a surveillance camera hundreds of times daily. For his ambitious and spellbinding feature drama, Chinese visual artist Xu Bing pieced together thousands of hours of found surveillance footage to depict an ill-fated romance against a faceless and frightening urban backdrop.
Qing Ting leaves the Buddhist temple where she has lived most of her adult life to work at a highly mechanized dairy farm. The repetitiveness of her daily routine echoes the monotonous rituals of life at the monastery—until, that is, she meets Ke Fan, a farm technician who falls for her. Their intertwined lives will take a series of unexpected turns in this mosaic of disconnected yet strangely concordant clips that at once presents a love story and offers a cogent analysis of postmodern identity in a digitally mediated world.
