Overview

In a snowy wood, a little girl stands transfixed by a fawn while her father takes aim with his rifle—pointed at his child. But the moment passes, and years later, Thelma (Eili Harboe) leaves the countryside and her strict, pious household to embark on her freshman year at college in Oslo. On the surface, Thelma is not unlike her fellow students: sensitive, vulnerable, feeling her way through new experiences in the adult world. But deep down, there is something unusual and extraordinary about her. One day while studying in the library, she experiences a violent seizure; fellow student Anja (Kaya Wilkins) comes to her aid.

A friendship soon blooms between the two young women, and Thelma experiences an emotional and sexual awakening that both thrills and terrifies her. As she struggles with her religious upbringing and the need to discover her true self, her seizures intensify, revealing supernatural abilities as well as disturbing secrets about her family—and bringing her to a fateful realization just as Anja goes mysteriously missing.

According to Indiewire, “Ingmar Bergman meets Stephen King” in Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, who co-wrote and directed this paranormal thriller.
