Sardonic, unhurried and quietly absurdist, Liu Jian’s animated neo-noir truly follows the money as it’s stolen more than once through a faded urban streetscape in southern China, evoking Blade Runner, The Godfather and the works of Tarantino by turns.
But this isn’t just a darkly comic mob caper. Against a murky backdrop of greenish-gray, advertisements pop in bright colors while the main characters dream bleakly of having the cash to redo botched plastic surgery or level up to “online shopping freedom,” revealing a tough-minded critique of contemporary consumer culture in China and beyond.
