Dutch filmmaker Daan Bakker's sly, strange tragicomedy about a quintet of 30-something misfits is told in five distinct parts. Koen, represented by an anthropomorphized dot onscreen, attends an annual family reunion at which he feels obligated to make a fool of himself for the sake of his Uncle Bob. Aspiring photographer Stefaan attempts to control his mania by creating a series of minimalist black-and-white stills. Kjell travels back in time and conjures up a medieval pantomime to heal a childhood trauma. In a series of vignettes, former punk guitarist Karel is returned to Earth by aliens; never quite fitting back in with humankind, he leaves a grotesque legacy for his parents. And Jef's hypersensitivity is tested when he meets his new girlfriend's family for a country weekend.
Bakker employs a different but equally inventive visual and narrative style for each episode; what links them thematically is the sense of dislocation, dysfunction and absurdity that dictates each man's life.
