Polish filmmaker Kasia Adamik directs this grim thriller, based on a true story, about real-life psychopathic writer Krystian Bala and Jacek Solkowsi, the guilt-ridden detective compelled to hunt him down.
Three years after a mutilated corpse is discovered floating in a river, Bala publishes a grisly novel, Amok, that appears to contain details about the unsolved murder. Identifying himself as an übermensch beyond moral judgment, Bala passes a lie-detector test. Yet he seems to be chasing notoriety for the crime as he begins to play an unsettling game of cat and mouse with the investigator.
Interweaving references to Nietzsche and Baudrillard with graphic scenes of violence and misogyny against a steely-gray backdrop, Adamik invokes modern society's preoccupation with fame and adulation to study the timeless banality of evil.
