Writer/director Sherwin Shilati’s update on the Pygmalion myth stars Nick Thune (see also Mr. Roosevelt, playing this year) as Jed, an introvert who realizes his professional photo-editing skills could allow him to lead an extraordinary life—if only on Facebook. Then he connects with Tasha (Halston Sage), a fledgling publicist who’s looking to make a celebrity out of a nobody. Soon enough, Jed emerges from his chrysalis as a social butterfly who parties with the likes of Usher.
As Tasha exploits his success, building his persona across social-media platforms, Jed reunites with a high-school flame, Franky (Kaily Smith Westbrook). But is it too late to reconcile the fake life he’s created with his true self? Shilati addresses such pressing modern-day dilemmas as the role our online images play in shaping our identities and the existential question of whether that which isn’t captured on social media really ever happens at all.
