Overview

Set in the unforgiving rural north of British Columbia, this tender yet heartbreaking drama from writer-director Kathleen Hepburn spans a year in the lives of a physically disabled mother and her discontent son—each alienated from their surroundings and struggling to manage in the face of grief, guilt and chronic disease.

Having lived with Parkinson's disease for almost two decades, Judy is accustomed to the challenges of daily life—until her husband and caregiver dies of a sudden heart attack on their isolated property on the shores of Stuart Lake. Meanwhile, her teenaged son Jamie—pushed by his father to get a job in the oil fields—has been grappling with his own challenges, stumbling his way through the grimy reality of camp life amid doubts about his sexuality.

When a violent attack against him leaves another man dead, Jamie finds himself shaken and stricken with remorse. Hoping for relief, he heads home, only to find his mother living in a state of disarray. But together—with the help of the pregnant teenager who delivers their groceries—they must try to carry on, shouldering the shared burden of not being enough for those they love.
