Not just another feminist revenge fantasy, Cold Hell is a timely, heart-pounding giallo-inspired thriller by Oscar-winning Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky that uses dementia, incest and religious extremism as plot devices while clevely subverting traditional gender roles.

Ozge, a Turkish-born taxi driver in Austria, comes home one night after work (and beating up a guy who wouldn’t move his car) to find her neighbor murdered. She sees the killer—and sees that he sees her—but when she asks the cops for protection, they dismiss her because she can’t describe him.

The title refers to a doubly nasty area in the Islamic concept of hell, both fiery and freezing, where the villain aims to place Muslim women he deems impure. Ozge—who has rage issues of her own, which she takes out on everyone from estranged family members to boorish customers via Thai kickboxing—now must go on the lam even as she sets out to avenge his victims with the help of initially skeptical detective Steiner.
