Art imitates life in Italian director Michele Vannucci's debut drama: protagonist Mirko, a middle-aged ex-con seeking redemption, was based on the charismatic actor who plays him, Mirko Frezza.
Their experiences merge in this captivating character study.Returning to the outskirts of Rome after eight years in jail, Mirko must deal with his drug-addled father, the wife he left behind and two daughters who have mixed feelings about his homecoming. Meanwhile, his friends tempt him to resume his role as a thug in their crime-infested suburb. But a community organizer has different plans. She gets Mirko elected neighborhood president and tasks him with cleaning it up. Instead of selling drugs and mugging people, Mirko finds himself working at a food bank and planting an organic tomato garden. His father says he can't defy destiny, but—sick as he is of being the bad guy—he's sure going to try.
