Every day is a crapshoot for Fortunata (Jasmine Trinca), the feisty heroine of this melodrama from Italian director Sergio Castellitto. Although her name means lucky,” she is anything but.
Castellitto's screenwriter-wife Margaret Mazzantini has created a strong and passionate character in this single mother who works as a hairdresser as she battles her abusive ex-husband for custody of their daughter Barbara. Traipsing through the streets of Rome to style the hair of her demanding customers, Fortunata dreams of opening her own beauty salon instead. Her business partner Chicano, a bipolar tattoo artist, plays the lottery in the hopes of making them both rich. Meanwhile, Barbara is acting out in school; when she is sent to a child psychologist, the cigar-smoking Patrizio, he tries to sweep Fortunata off her tired feet. But his unconventional "therapy” brings Fortunata even more trouble.
Trinca won Best Actress in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for her role in Fortunata.
