Overview

In the days leading up to World War II, the residents of a boarding house in Silesia, near the German-Polish border, appear to be ordinary people living ordinary lives, seemingly disconnected from one another. But when a reporter from Warsaw arrives in search of a famous yet anonymous author he believes to be hiding in the area, they begin to interact—and we soon discover many secrets held within the tenement's walls, including the ways in which the tenants' lives intertwine with the Jewish beauty Róza. She adds an air of sensual mystery to their surroundings—until the Gestapo comes calling.

With a soundtrack that replicates the music of the late 1930s and haunting visuals, Polish director Michal Rosa's The Happiness of the World is a slow-burning period drama not soon forgotten.
