In this Danish dramatic comedy with elements of magical realism, writer-director Christian Tafdrup delves into the emotional dilemma of a middle-aged couple facing empty-nest syndrome. When their son Esben leaves his childhood home, his parents Kjeld and Vibeke struggle to fill the void. She retreats to her garden for solace; he wanders the house aimlessly—until a desire to relive their youth overtakes him.
Kjeld convinces his wife to downsize to an apartment—the same one they rented 30 years ago as students in the heart of Copenhagen. Working from old photographs, Kjeld retrofits the space with relics from their past; he plays the same records and drinks the same wine in the hopes that he and Vibeke will rekindle their passion for one another. Then one morning, the couple wakes up to find that they've actually traveled back in time. Happiness appears within their grasp—at least until Esben shows up.
